During the summer of 2005, I was fortunate enough to get to spend several nights on Kitt Peak as part of the NOAO's TLRBSE program. Along with 14 other teachers, I spent five nights using various telescopes collecting data as part of an ongoing research project.
The project with which my group was involved was searching the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) for the occurance of novae, which are exploding stars. We used the 0.9-meter WIYN telescope and the 2048 x 2048 pixel MOSAIC CCD imager.
Kitt Peak National Observatory-- the 4-meter Mayall telescope is the tall dome on the left.
The nearest dome is the 0.9-meter WIYN telescope. The far dome is the 3.5-meter WIYN.
A beautiful sunset every day!
There are 19 optical telescopes on the mountain, along with one radio telescope.
